A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of Riverbeds represented by polygons to display true river width, derived by Critchlow from paper Topographic maps. Greater detail in City areas where applicable. Due to large braided stream networks, a river can often be seen as significantly less than its bed, in the dry season some tracks are located on river beds, these indicate the extent of the river at full capacity.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of contextual river features (major rivers and tributaries) represented by polygon objects derived by Critchlow from paper Topographic maps (mainly LINZ). NB see RiverLine for line and polyline objects

These features indicate the location of rivers. Where significant flow or width and depth of a river is evident these are represented by polygons. Polygon segments are also evident in urban areas to provide a more complete representation. Line networks show rural or highland areas where flow is not significant. Rivers are named where available.

The rivers are each assigned a heirarchy based on the "Strahler" stream order classification, for simplicity, generally only heirarchies of three to eight have been included in this dataset.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of Built Up areas defined by LINZ and modified by Critchlow to encompass the extent of built up urban areas including commercial and residential categories. These are named urbanised areas.

'Urban' is defined as 'of, pertaining to, or constituting a city or town; occurring in or characteristic of a city or town'. In the majority of cases, an urban area will be characterised by high population density, small land holdings (regularly less than 0.4 hectares), and zoning that is compatible with high density commercial, industrial and/or residential activity.

Critchlow modifications to the original dataset include the identification of detailed boundaries for built up areas from the latest available aerial imagery supplied by LINZ. Therefore the dataset contains whole urban areas not included in the original LINZ dataset.

The park boundaries are derived by Critchlow from various sources (LINZ paper maps in City areas) and aligned to land parcel boundaries, and are updated and maintained by Critchlow.
