A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of a combination of recreation data extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The recreation data consists of:
- Showgrounds: Data of public areas containing buildings, paddocks etc. for the display of livestock, agricultural produce, machinery, and the like
- Sports fields: Data of fields on which sporting activities are carried.- Racetracks: data of courses laid out for racing
- Golf courses: Data of areas set aside for playing golf.

This layer is a component of the Topo50 map series. The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, Chatham and New Zealand's offshore islands, at 1:50,000 scale. Further information on Topo50: www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/topo50

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of Regional Council Administrative Boundaries. These are the largest administration units as legally defined by government. They are released annually on the 1st of January to coincide with the update of meshblocks, but there are not always changes from the previous classification.

Regional Councils were established in November 1989 after the abolition of the 22 local government regions. The Local Government Act 2002 requires the boundaries of regions to conform as far as possible to one or more water catchments. When determining regional boundaries, the Local Government Commission gave consideration to regional communities of interest when selecting water catchments to be included in a region. It also considered factors such as natural resource management, land use planning and environmental matters.

Regional councils are defined at meshblock and area unit level. The seaward boundaries of the Regional Councils are the outer limits of the territorial sea of New Zealand (12 mile limit).

Regional councils cover every territorial authority in New Zealand with the exception of Chatham Islands Territory. Generally regional councils contain complete territorial authorities. Where territorial authorities straddle regional council boundaries, the affected area has been statistically defined in complete area units.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of named retail area polygons in urbanised areas, derived by Critchlow from a mixture of LINZ Topographic maps, aerial imagery, and local knowledge. Includes any retail districts. Indicates an area of significant commercial importance, for example, all of Wellington CBD where shops are located, shopping malls or out of town retail parks.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of contextual river features (major rivers and tributaries) represented by polygon objects derived by Critchlow from paper Topographic maps (mainly LINZ). NB see RiverLine for line and polyline objects

These features indicate the location of rivers. Where significant flow or width and depth of a river is evident these are represented by polygons. Polygon segments are also evident in urban areas to provide a more complete representation. Line networks show rural or highland areas where flow is not significant. Rivers are named where available.

The rivers are each assigned a heirarchy based on the "Strahler" stream order classification, for simplicity, generally only heirarchies of three to eight have been included in this dataset.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of Riverbeds represented by polygons to display true river width, derived by Critchlow from paper Topographic maps. Greater detail in City areas where applicable. Due to large braided stream networks, a river can often be seen as significantly less than its bed, in the dry season some tracks are located on river beds, these indicate the extent of the river at full capacity.

Critchlow Formed Road Network is A nationwide network of formed roads and walkways accessible to the public.

A formed road is land that has been set aside, and prepared, for vehicle traffic. The surface of the road may be sealed, or it may be rough (wheel tracks), but it must be accessible in all weather conditions by a standard, non-SUV, family type vehicle.

A walkway is land that has been set aside, and prepared, for foot traffic.

All formed roads that are named (publicly or privately owned, formally or informally named) will be represented within the Critchlow road network.

The Critchlow Road Network follows the following basic principles:
1) It is a connected network. All segments in the dataset will perfectly connect with their neighbouring segments where, in the real world, a vehicle can drive between the road sections represented by the connecting segments.
2) It uses nationally consistent naming standards for all roads, a nationally consistent set of prefixes and suffixes, and nationally consistently applied abbreviations for such prefixes and suffixes.
3) It is composed entirely of lines or polylines. No other type of object is acceptable, including multipolylines.
4) It represent real world road features, such as roundabouts, dual carriageways, ramps and slip roads.
