A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of 2013 Statistics NZ Meshblock boundaries. Meshblocks are the smallest geographic units of data recognised by Statistics New Zealand. Meshblocks aggregate to build larger geographic areas, such as area units, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

Meshblocks contain on average approximately 150 people and 40 houses. They cover about one city block in urban areas. Some meshblocks do not contain any population.

Meshblocks vary in size from part of a city block to large areas of rural land. Each meshblock abuts another to cover all of New Zealand, extending out to the 200-mile economic zone (approximately 320 kilometres).

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of a combination of Water layers extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The combined Water layer consists of the following water body polygons :

  • River: natural, flowing body of water emptying into an ocean, lake or other body of water and usually fed along its course by converging tributaries.
  • Lake: any standing body of fresh inland water.
  • Pond: area of shallow water with walls or banks created for a specific purpose.
  • Reservoir: receptacle in which a large quantity of water is stored - Canal: artificial open waterway used for transportation, waterpower or irrigation.
  • Lagoon: sheet of salt water separated from the open sea by sand, shingle banks or a road embankment.

These layers are a component of the. Topo50 map series. The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, Chatham and New Zealand's offshore islands, at 1:50,000 scale. Further information on Topo50: www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/topo50

  • Mangrove: Coastal or brackish or saline area covered by specially adapted trees.
  • Native forest: Land covered by trees native to New Zealand.
  • Orchard: Land covered by pip or stone fruit or vegetation.
  • Scrub: Land covered by vegetation less than 3 m high.-Vineyards: Land covered by vines e.g. grapes, kiwifruit etc.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of a combination of landcover data extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The landcover data consists of the following types of cover:
- Swamp: A wet or moist region with water standing on or just below the surface of the ground, and usually covered by a growth of vegetation
- Ice: A region of permanent ice
- Mud: An area of wet, soft earthy matter
- Rock: Coastal rocks; rocks between high and low tide
- Sand: Sand, crushed rock, shells etc. smaller than 2mm in size
- Scree: Mountain slope covered with small stones
- Shingle: Crushed rock, shells etc. larger than 2mm in size
- Gravel pit: Area used for the extraction of coarse sand and small water-worn or pounded stones, used for paths and roads
- Landfill: A portion of land on which refuse, solid or semi-solid waste, is dumped and then covered with earth
- Moraine: An accumulation of boulders, stones or other debris carried and deposited by a glacier
- Pumice: Area used for the extraction of pumice

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of a combination of historic sites, monuments, and fortification extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The Topographic historic layer consists of the places where there has been historic activity, where there is a historic object, or the structures erected as a memorial can be found in this layer. Also contained are a combination of European fortifications and Maori defensive earthworks extracted from the LINZ web portal. The fortification data consists of: - Redoubt points: European fortification of the New Zealand Wars- Pa points: Defensive earthworks constructed by Maori at any time between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries which were still visible as a topographical object at the time the first edition of the map was published.

This layer is a component of the Topo50 map series. The Topo50 map
series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, Chatham and New Zealand's offshore islands, at 1:50,000 scale. Further information on Topo50: www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/topo50

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of contextual river features (major rivers and tributaries) represented by line and polyline objects derived by Critchlow from paper Topographic maps (mainly LINZ). NB see RiverArea for area objects.

These features indicate the location of rivers. Where significant flow or width and depth of a river is evident these are represented by polygons. Polygon segments are also evident in urban areas to provide a more complete representation. Line networks show rural or highland areas where flow is not significant. Rivers are named where available.

The rivers are each assigned a heirarchy based on the "Strahler" stream order classification, for simplicity, generally only heirarchies of three to eight have been included in this dataset.
