This dataset was first added to NationalMap Data Service on 18 Jun 2017.

A subset of Critchlow NationalMap consisting of Statistics NZ Meshblock boundaries. Meshblocks are the smallest geographic units of data recognised by Statistics New Zealand. Meshblocks aggregate to build larger geographic areas, such as area units, territorial authorities, and regional councils.

Meshblocks contain on average approximately 150 people and 40 houses. They cover about one city block in urban areas. Some meshblocks do not contain any population.

Meshblocks vary in size from part of a city block to large areas of rural land. Each meshblock abuts another to cover all of New Zealand, extending out to the 200-mile economic zone (approximately 320 kilometres).
