A subset of NationalMap consisting of a combination of Water layers extracted from the LINZ web portal.

The combined Water layer consists of the following water body polygons :

  • River: natural, flowing body of water emptying into an ocean, lake or other body of water and usually fed along its course by converging tributaries.
  • Lake: any standing body of fresh inland water.
  • Pond: area of shallow water with walls or banks created for a specific purpose.
  • Reservoir: receptacle in which a large quantity of water is stored - Canal: artificial open waterway used for transportation, waterpower or irrigation.
  • Lagoon: sheet of salt water separated from the open sea by sand, shingle banks or a road embankment.

These layers are a component of the. Topo50 map series. The Topo50 map series provides topographic mapping for the New Zealand mainland, Chatham and New Zealand's offshore islands, at 1:50,000 scale. Further information on Topo50: www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/topo50

These are named major lakes derived by NationalMap from various paper map sources including street maps in city areas.

A subset of NationalMap consisting of Riverbeds represented by polygons to display true river width, derived by NationalMap from paper Topographic maps. Greater detail in City areas where applicable. Due to large braided stream networks, a river can often be seen as significantly less than its bed, in the dry season some tracks are located on river beds, these indicate the extent of the river at full capacity.

A subset of NationalMap consisting of contextual river features (major rivers and tributaries) represented by polygon objects derived by NationalMap from paper Topographic maps (mainly LINZ). NB see RiverLine for line and polyline objects

These features indicate the location of rivers. Where significant flow or width and depth of a river is evident these are represented by polygons. Polygon segments are also evident in urban areas to provide a more complete representation. Line networks show rural or highland areas where flow is not significant. Rivers are named where available.

The rivers are each assigned a heirarchy based on the "Strahler" stream order classification, for simplicity, generally only heirarchies of three to eight have been included in this dataset.
